Cultural activist Todd Wong cites Topp’s “wonderful humanist quality”

VANCOUVER -- NDP leadership candidate Brian Topp has concluded an energetic five-day swing through BC with a slew of new supporters including Todd Wong, the renowned founder of the Gung Haggis Fat Choy cross-cultural celebration.

"Brian has a wonderful humanistic quality.  I found him to be thoughtful and caring - not aggressive or aloof.  People that I admire and trust - they trust and admire Brian, and now so do I," Wong said after meeting with Topp at a Chinese New Year’s celebration.

Topp was grateful for the support, and said his message about restoring tax fairness to make sure the top one percent pay their fair share is drawing a growing number of BC New Democrats to his campaign.

Topp has already earned the support of many prominent BC New Democrats, including former provincial leaders Joy MacPhail, Dawn Black and Carole James, and  federal deputy leader Libby Davies. Topp has endorsements from five BC MPs and 17 MLAs. He also has wide-ranging support across the province from grass roots activists.

In addition to Wong, other recent BC additions to team Topp endorsers include:

  • Linda Asgeirsson, secretary to the New Westminster-Coquitlam riding association
  • Sheila Baxter, author and anti-poverty activist
  • Brett Barden, president of the Surrey-Green Timbers constituency association
  • Soren Bech, long-time communications director for BC campaigns
  • Joan Bech, former Langley school trustee
  • Thelma Pankiw, former executive assistant to Premier Mike Harcourt
  • John Pollard, Election Planning Committee chair for Surrey North federal riding
  • Peter Prontzos, Political Science instructor and former provincial candidate
  • John Shields, former president of the BCGEU

Topp spent Wednesday to Sunday in BC, attending town halls, meetings, social events and membership recruitment drives on Vancouver Island, Sunshine Coast, Vancouver, Tri-Cities, and Surrey. By the time the deadline for new memberships came on Saturday, Topp’s campaign delivered thousands of sign-ups or renewals to the party.
